Access to justice in rural communities is a nationwide problem, and so is a shortage of lawyers in rural counties. We try to identify first year law students who are interested in the access to justice issues in rural counties in particular and who might want to practice in rural counties. To this end, the law school has set up a summer externship program where they get placed with a judge/judges in a rural county for the summer, to complete legal and writing assignments for the judge and help with caseloads, but also to see from the bench's perspective what the role of a judge is in rural communities, and how the practice of law in rural counties can influence the well-being of the entire community.
