Trauma-Informed Care: Those Affected by the Criminal Justice System

People who have been involved with the criminal justice system (i.e., detention and incarceration) may face unique challenges upon entering the workforce. The collective impact of childhood or prior trauma, invasive practices and lack of privacy in the jail, distrust of the system, and lack of freedom, lends to increased risk of re-traumatization and the need for further rehabilitation. Training on trauma-informed care for those providing employment assessments, supports, and services may help to foster a successful transition, as well as increased employment success and job retention, while reducing further harm to previously incarcerated individuals. Through a multidisciplinary collaboration, the CRE developed an online training module to complement and augment the “Public Health and YOU” training on trauma-informed care by providing access to population-specific information and skill development.
