Project abstract
Sustaining and scaling up volunteer programs in rural communities is challenging. Brown County Literacy Coalition, a local non-profit organization in Brown County Indiana, has been running a tutoring program for 3rd to 6th graders, with students from Indiana University as the volunteer tutors. Nevertheless, the number of children served by this program has been limited due to the travel distance for the tutors and the little resources available to the program.
The goal for this project is two-fold. First, the study aims to provide additional support to the tutoring program in three ways: (1) provide financial support for the volunteer tutors to travel between the university campus and Brown County, (2) organize a series of events with speakers sharing about their jobs with the tutees, (3) provide a collection of books about different jobs as reading materials of the program. Second, from a research perspective, we employ a person–environment fit model to examine the match/mismatch between the needs of the volunteer tutors and the structure of the tutoring program, so as to explore possible ways to increase the number of tutors of the program in the future.
