Sustaining Hoosier Communities: Placemaking at Lake Salinda of Washington County
Project abstract
Jeeyea Kim, an Assistant Professor of the Miller Architecture Program, will lead a semester-long, community-based studio project working closely with the key community members of Washington County. The main site of the project is Lake Salinda, an 88-acre surface lake owned by the City of Salem, which used to be the primary drinking water source for Salem residents, but the water quality is no longer suitable for drinking. With the change, the community members of the City of Salem and Washington County are eager to involve more outdoor leisure activities, and there is a great opportunity to develop the site as a central community recreation area.
For ’21 SP, students of Z602: Architectural Studio V will be asked to propose two different scale of community engagement projects at Lake Salinda. Project 1, Public Art Proposal at Lake Salinda, will ask students to design a public art that will re-envision a public space around the Lake Salinda area. Project 2, Boathouse Community Center, will ask students to design a community center that includes a boathouse and other supporting programs for the community. While both projects will be located around Lake Salinda, Project 1 will be the main project granting the funding from ServeDesign Placemaking Grants.
