Project abstract
Rural individuals make up one fifth of the elderly population and are at the highest risk for requiring long-term care services and support. Existing technologies to support the healthy, independent living of older adults conceptualize the older adult as a recipient of care. Our innovation is the introduction of peer-care as a way to transform burden traditionally placed on caregivers into opportunities for older adults to help each other age in place. Our initial focus will be on remote check-in to ensure older adults in the peer network are ok. We will examine how well different technologies can help rural older adults stay connected and check-in with each other on a daily basis.
