Thinking Outside the Book: Community Engagement with Rural Libraries

A listening tour was conducted with staff and stakeholders in each of twenty public libraries in the eleven-county Uplands region in order to learn about immediate and long-term goals in the areas of public access, services provided, collection development, and community engagement. With information gathered from a user survey distributed to the communities, the project provided individual libraries with 1) tailored recommendations for user and library discovery of attainable resources and services, 2) comprehensive research resources and platforms compiled with sustainably accessible avenues and tailored specifically to the community's needs and interests, and 3) sustainable facilitation of community programming.
