Health: Addressing Youth Substance Use and Prevention through Social-Emotional Learning: Implementing the Second Step Curriculum

Project abstract

Partnering with Brown County Schools, The Aldrich Project Advisory Group intends to expand access to substance use prevention programming for students in grades K-6 through the implementation of the evidence-based Second Step social-emotional learning curriculum. As an interprofessional community health project, undergraduate and graduate students from the IUB School of Nursing, IUB Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, IUB School of Public Health, and IUB School of Social Work will collaborate to develop, implement and evaluate the creation of up to 14 videos for grades K-6 to complement e-learning requirements during COVID-19.

The overall goal of this project is to increase social-emotional learning skills and strategies for school-aged youth creating more confident, resilient, and healthy youth in rural communities.

This project falls under the CRE Goal 2: Create a comprehensive suite of interventions to address substance use disorder and its stigma, and increase access to prevention and treatment resources by deploying the suite in partnership with communities.

Funding for this project has the potential to expand the Second Step curriculum into future semesters at additional schools and grade levels. The videos created will allow for sustainability of this program during learning at home directives due to COVID-19 and after these directives have been lifted.
