Quality of Place: Owen Middle School Maker-space

Project abstract

This proposal, submitted to both ServeDesign Center in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design and Center for Rural Engagement in IUB, aims to offer the design proposals for creative renovation of classroom spaces—maker-space at Owen Valley Middle School in Spencer, Indiana. Primary objectives include:

  1. Documentation and analysis of existing conditions
  2. Extensive precedent projects research
  3. Design the interiors of the maker-space including the phases of schematic design and design development

This project would have direct support from the Owen Valley Middle School will take on a collaborative role. Also, students in the Interior Design Area at the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design will have opportunities to work directly with the local community. This aligns with the mission of the Indiana University ServeDesign Center, “work in partnership with campus and community to advance engaged scholarship and prepare for lifelong civic and social responsibility in an increasingly diverse and complete global society.”

As a faculty member of the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture, and Design, I teach, promote, and recognize service-learning as a form of experiential learning in which students meet community-identified needs (service), then analyze and reflect on the at service (learning). Service-learning has been found to offer personal and professional benefits to the students, faculty, and community organizations. This is closely corresponding to the School’s mission to, “enrich our student learning and preparation through opportunities such as service-learning and to “connect and engage with the community” through community partnership.
